現在、ビザを持っていて（在留カードを持っている人）、在留資格変更や在留期間更新の申請を出入国在留管理局（いわゆる入管）にしたが、在留カードに書いてある在留期限までに審査結果が出ないと不安に思う外国人は多くいます。

: As a general rule, applications for visa renewals are accepted from three months before the expiration of the period of stay.
：Until when will you accept visa applications?

・・・の申請があった場合（３０日以下の在留期間が決定されている者からの申請があった場合を除く。）において、その申請の時に当該外国人が有する在留資格を伴う在留期間の満了の日までにその申請に対する処分がされないときは、当該外国人は、その在留期間の満了後も、当該処分がされる時または従前の在留期間の満了の日から２月を経過する日が終了する時のいずれか早い時までの間は、引き続き当該在留資格をもって本邦に在留することができる。

簡単に言うと、在留カードを持っている外国人が、在留期限内に変更や期間更新の申請をした場合、在留カードに書いてある在留期限を過ぎても、

: ※２ If a person who had a residence card applied for it before the expiration date of their stay, but the examination result came after the expiration of the period of stay and the permission was not granted, they will usually switch to a "designated activities" visa to prepare for departure from Japan. Therefore, it is not subject to the special period under the law.しかし、実務上は、※１・２の場合でも、入管の相談窓口などに相談し、申請が受理された場合は、法令上・判例上は特例期間対象外ですが申請時に提示したパスポートに申請受理印が押されますので、不法残留状態ではありますが警察等に逮捕されたり入管に収容されたりすることは無いでしょう。
